Just because Reem Acra recently showcased their fabulous 2010 bridal line, or because Priscilla of Boston may be on every ad page of your local bridal magazine does not mean that your dream dress is limited to what's only new and seen. You may want to take a look at fashion's past instead of fashion's present. This post via Martha Stewart Weddings will give you a good look at both.

Having finished up bridal market not so long ago, I've been thinking about wedding dresses a lot lately. And since I happened to receive a copy of a book entitled The White Dress: Fashion Inspiration for Brides by Harriet Worsley, I've started really wondering how most brides go about making their wedding dress decision. This book is a great resource full of visual references, from royal weddings to runway images, which begs the question: Are you looking to vintage references, have you turned to the dresses and styles of your fave celebrities (bridal and more contemporary read-to-wear), or is it all about the current bridal offerings? In the book, the author suggests different style types (the siren, the damsel, the fairytale princess) that I find useful for defining one's style, but I'm wondering if others do as well. Here's the siren:

I don't necessarily think of myself as the Marlene Dietrich or Jean Harlow type.

Ms. Worlsey also takes on the topics of hats and veils, which are things that most of us aren't thinking about on a daily basis, so when the wedding comes up, well, it's something to think about at least. The photographed dress is by Lanvin.

The author also includes lots of couture and ready-to-wear references, which, done in white, could be amazing wedding dresses. Christian Dior on the left and Giles Deacon on the right:

Is the last one too out there for you?

I guess your process may also depend on whether or not you're having a dress made, although I must say I was super impressed with the number of bridal gown designers who are open to all sorts of customization (Simone Carvalli comes to mind as one example). devon and joe just wanted to get married and that was enough for them. devon did not want a reception, she just wanted joe and the ones she loved around her. so, the last week of april we met them down in mesa arizona (devon is from az). they started their weekend at a steakhouse for a intimate dinner for just family. devon’s brother made the best little wedding video i have ever seen (click here to see cameron trejo’s site - he does wedding videography.) the next morning i met devon and joe at the lds mesa temple. we went early to get some pictures of them there and then they went in - just them and their family. when they came out of the temple all their family was there to greet them (and a few close friends). it was perfect, just what devon wanted.

I love that they had a fun weekend their style - your wedding should be all about the two of you! Devon + Joe decided to do a fun post wedding session also - and I love the photos Jill captured for them! It was at the salt flats (at the great salt lake) and it is so playful - so them. I hope you all enjoy the photos as much as I did. Thanks so much for sending me these Jill, and congrats to Devon + Joe!

So anyways, Speidi is cutting the cake and all of a sudden they get really upset and they start yelling at me and telling me to give them my CF card and how did I get in, and which magazine do I work for. Ha! They thought I was paparazzi! (This may or may not all end up on The Hills- who knows). Well, then I was asked to delete my photos in front of their photographer so he could watch me do it, and then some very VERY large men started to “remove” me. It was pretty crazy. There was one guy who stopped them and said he would follow me (along with two giant bodyguards) and make sure I left without the whole, like, throw-me-out thing. I think he realized that I was NOT going to sell the photos to some magazine but that I really was just a vendor. I kept saying “but I’m not a paparazzi- I’m an artist!”. The whole thing was seriously hilarious- especially because they thought I was some sleazy photographer who was going to sell their photos… Here I was asked to shoot details and people at this wedding and next thing I know, I was being “escorted out”.

Bridal Fashion Week III: Vera Wang

So I am up late with my newborn when I came across this post via Martha Stewarts Wedding Blog. Looking at Vera Wang's 2010 collection is just the double shot of espresso I need at this hour. Her collection is so feminine and romantic; like reading a great period love story. Sense and Sensibility anyone?

Vera Wang was lovely, as could be expected. The event was held in her offices/studio, where they've had the runway presentations in the past. This was to be a bit more informal, with models coming out in the dresses rather than having a full runway show. What made it especially nice was hearing from Vera herself about the design. So, as each model came out, Vera explained the thinking behind the dress. In general, the idea behind the collection was to convey a looser, organic, washed feeling; she wanted it to look sort of undone. So, what emerged from this sort of thinking was beautiful ball gowns that were entirely unique and new and special—and you'll find something completely unexpected after the jump.

Throughout the collection, there was this idea of perfect imperfections. The delicate layers of raw-edged scalloped organza look messy and unplanned, but if fact, there's quite a bit of structure dictating that look.

I especially liked the use of bias cut organza strips to create volume, like on this tulle skirt.

In honor of the last day of Bridal Market, we're going out with a bang. Read below for my conversation with Vera Wang, a woman who needs no introduction from me.

So, how are you feeling right now? Do you ever get nervous?
It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t fret, worry, and rethink everything. I’m beginning to get excited, and that’s a very good thing at this point.

What do you do in the 48 hours leading up to the show?
I’m exhausted from fittings with the models. The models are so important to the collection because they really translate what I hope to express.

What do brides want now?
A wedding dress that is modern and sensuous yet feminine and elegant.

I am all about taking great pictures. And even though I don't own a great digital camara, I never stop wanting one. I even requested one for my 30th birthday. We went on a vacay instead. But I still want my camara. So yes I am just a little envious of those in the Scottsdale, AZ vacinity whom can learn how to take great pics from the pros. Hot Trends, Interviews & Dresses Galore...

New York Fashion Week is in full swing! If you're not in New York to see the new styles hit the runway, fear not ~ the Priscilla of Boston Group Runway Shows can be watched on video, as they streamed live this year for the very first time!

I was so thrilled to attend the fabulous show...even if it was from that "VIP" seat in front of my computer - ha! Hey, it's all good. I still got to see some of the hottest trends right off the runway, so that I can share them here, with you!

Who's ready to go dress shopping? According to Brides.com on Twitter, "many of the looks will be available in Priscilla of Boston stores in April", so you won't have to worry about the usual waiting. Now that's something to look forward to, right?

Until those beauties hit the stores, let's look at some of the trends, shall we?

Brides.com Senior Editor, Anne Chertoff, interviewed Priscilla of Boston designer, Tracy Uomoleale about the new Spring 2010 line.. Tracy spoke about how Priscilla of Boston designs are often known for their classic styling with modern twists. This year, she's decided to add in subtle touches of color such as pearl and petal, making the dresses really "come alive".

Many of the dresses in this line are adorned with high-sheen beaded detailing, Swarovski crystals, feathers and other gorgeous embellishments. The dresses are sweet like candy, while remaining sophisticated and sexy all at the same time!

When asked to talk a little bit about who the Priscilla of Boston bride is, Tracy explained that she believes this bride, "embraces tradition, classic styling and attention to detail", but that she enjoys a little more of the modern touches of today as well.

For the new Spring 2010 line, Tracy has designed several of the gowns with traditional fabrics such as silk and satin, while keeping in mind the hot modern looks brides crave so much today.

Oooh...I'm loving it! Seriously, watching the runway show was amazing. It truly was one breathtaking dress after another - "bam, bam, bam!", just like that. Watching the show, I felt like I was a little girl all over again, flipping through bridal magazines "oooohing" and "aaaahing" over them. Simply stunning!

Honeymoon on your own island...anyone?

Celebrities can afford their own private island honeymoon getaways, but here's a secret: so can you. Tammy Levent, owner of Elite Travel, leads the way to private island resorts where you and your new spouse can live it up in rock star style.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, Fergie and Josh Duhamel, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman all spent their post-nuptials tucked away on private islands. And while that may seem like a luxury reserved for multi-millionaires, there are some private islands that are better deals than you may think.

Raffles Canouan Resort

Just 110 miles west of Barbados is Raffles Canouan resort: 156 luxury rooms and villas curving around three white sand beaches. Each room or villa comes with its own golf cart that guests can use to traverse the three hundred acre estate. Over one hundred villas may seem like a lot of company for a private island, but...

when you have three hundred acres to explore, you won't see your neighbors unless you want to. If you go during the low season, there are not only fewer people, but the villas are cheaper also. Just be sure to get trip insurance in case of hurricanes.

Since you can't spend a whole week inside a luxurious suite with a king sized bed and deep soaking tub (can you?), there are four restaurants and bars, a large swimming pool, tennis courts, the Trump Club Privee casino, the Raffles Golf Course (voted top course in the Caribbean), and the Raffles Amrita spa with treatment rooms overlooking the ocean. Their honeymoon package ranges from $4,630 to $17,860 per week depending on the room or villa and the time of year. That price may seem steep, but when you consider that it covers 7 nights, transportation from Barbados to Canouan via private jet, most activities and breakfasts, it's surprisingly affordable. And if you're planning a destination wedding, Raffles Canouan has a stunning 17th century stone church that was shipped from England and reconstructed on the island in the 19th century.

Royal Plantation at Fowl Cay

If piloting your own golf cart thrills you, how about your own private motorboat? And does your villa need a butler? Royal Plantation at Fowl Cay thinks so. Only thirty people at a time can stay at this six villa resort on a fifty-acre island, just two hundred miles from Miami. Villas come with full-sized stocked kitchens, butler service, and a small boat, which you can use after proving some competency. If you're wondering what a butler does, he meets you at the arrival dock with a silver tray of drinks, cooks your breakfasts, loads your snorkel gear into the boat for your tour of the islands, and disappears at exactly the right times.

To get to Fowl Cay, fly into Nassau International Airport, then take a forty-minute flight to Staniel Cay airstrip in the Exuma islands. The Royal Plantation boat will pick you up when you land and take you to the island. Hey, if it was easy to get there, it wouldn't be a private island, would it? There is a 4-day, 3 night minimum stay for $2175 per person, which is a very good price since a comparable experience in Tahiti would cost $1800 per night (and doesn't include food). —Tammy Levent

I noticed beautiful colour on the runway this year. Features like moulded flowers, pockets and coloured shawls made an appearance. While there was still a lot of “bling” jeweled adornments, it was certainly downplayed this year. It felt much more subtle. There was also a return to big, full traditional skirts- though the short wedding dress is still a popular design and the skirts- so many ful tulle ballerine style skirts!

Engagement Session: Stephanie and Kyle

This lovely engagement session came to my inbox from super talented Santa Barbara photographer Chelsea Elizabeth. Stephanie and Kyle are going to be married July of this year at an undisclosed location. (I would tell you but I don't want you to crash their party.) You'll just have to find out later when we get pics of their big day. One thing we do know...Stephanie will make a gorgeous bride!

Here is a quote from the bride herself explaining how she met her future hubby:

It all began with a sweet start thanks to our first love: ice cream! Kyle and I met at Azusa Pacific University where we had class together everyday the first semester of our freshman year. Although we saw each other frequently, conversation hadn’t progressed past a polite “hi” and smile. It was at an ice cream social where, melted vanilla in hand, Kyle gathered the nerve to strike up a conversation. That day (along with Kyle’s strategic choice of seats in class) began a friendship where we continued to discover our similarities. About eight months later, again with ice cream in hand, we decided to be “more than friends” and started dating. After three years together, we’re so excited to get married in July, 2009! Among other wedding plans, we’re still trying to figure out how to have an ice-cream cake without it melting into a sticky mess!

Yes, I am still on maternity vacation, but I could not miss the much anticipated A Soolip Wedding, which is a bridal fair for the more modern bride. Or should I say a bridal fair for the Adam and Eve Wedding Consultant Bride. :) The event was this past Sunday. Real Wedding Oregon: Ali + Evan

When the time came to get married we quickly declared a summer wedding. I don’t think there was ever a doubt in our minds that we would be married outside. In fact I think our only two requirements at the time were outdoors and good food. July seemed the safest bet in Oregon for a rain-free event and after some deliberation we opted for a wedding in our home state of Oregon. We first heard about Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley, Oregon from some friends of ours. Upon arriving at the space and meeting Scott and Sherri it became immediately clear that this was the spot. At the incredibly amazing suggestion of the property owners we booked the farm for three nights and decided to invite our guests to a three day affair on the farm, overnight stays included. Given our hectic lifestyles trying to keep the café afloat we set the date for July and didn’t look back.

Our ceremony and reception took place on a very warm and very beautiful summer day at Pendarvis farm in Happy Valley, Oregon. Before the ceremony guests enjoyed Mint-Limeade, Cucumber Water, and Ice Tea served from oversize glass containers labeled with individual slate chalkboards....

I wore a gown by Alvina Valenta and a birdcage veil with a fresh gardenia flower attached for the ceremony...

Evan and I chose to walk each other down the aisle and my father proceeded us with our family of three pugs; Zeus who belongs to us, Caesar who belongs to my dad, and Matilda, who belongs to my sister and brother-in-law.

Our custom ceramic ring bowl was hand-stamped by Paloma’s Nest with a quote from our favorite Pablo Neruda poem....

"I want to do with you what spring does with cherry trees"

Our goal was to create an event that showcased the best of what our state had to offer. With Oregon in mind our first thoughts were to highlight the Pacific Northwest and all of its tremendous beauty. We wanted an outdoor space that showcased our state’s elegant rustic nature, its beautiful tree lines and mountain views. We wanted a menu that savored and did justice to the insanely gorgeous flavor profiles of the local food scene, and that paid tribute to all of the local food purveyors and vendors we work with and amongst in this fair city. We wanted an atmosphere that felt inviting and personal, homegrown and rooted in love, an environment where people felt comfortable, like family.

Both of our grandfather’s are Jewish and while not practicing Evan and I felt it would be a nice way to honor our elders by incorporating our favorite Jewish wedding traditions. In the months leading up to the ceremony we asked all of our guests to send in a swatch of fabric. Later these patches were collected and eventually sewn in to a quilt by Evan’s mother, which later became the canopy for our chuppah.

We chose to write our own vows and we exchanged them through the guidance of my mom’s best friend, a dear family friend whom we ordained over the internet and whose wedding I was incidentally in as a little four year old. After the exchanging of our vows we called our mothers up to act as witnesses in the signing of our kettubah.

Beneath the canopy and along the edge of the willow branches our florist hung cymbidium orchids from different colors of silk ribbon.

The Groom and the Groomsmen wore Seersucker suits by Haspel, red checked shirts from Ben Sherman, Banana Republic Knit ties, and each groomsmen received custom Converse high tops with personalized tag, and vintage typewriter cufflinks as a gift.

5. You can download the Calligraphy style font for free here. You have to then install the font on your computer. Or use any fancy font that you like.

4. Open up the document you wish to print such as the invite. Print out your desired amount. We recommend a few extras. The invite will simply have the design on it and have a blank middle.

5. Open up the word documents that are in the word documents folder and type in your personal text. You may have to fiddle with it to get the correct spacing since everyone’s wording will vary.

Oooooh...Good question I Do Sugar. Would you want his ex to attend your wedding? How about would you want your own ex attending your wedding? Great dialogue. I have to say that I have this "friend" whose ex attended her wedding. Awkward. He even knocked on their privacy door to say congratulations and was rumored to have been crying during the ceremony. Super awkward. I have to hear what you think about this?

In case you missed it, Bruce Willis married Emma Heming in Turks and Caicos over the weekend, and as I'm sure you could have guessed, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore were in attendance. While I think it's great that Demi and Bruce have been able to maintain a friendship postdivorce, especially for their kids' sake, I don't know if I'd be OK with my new husband's ex-wife attending my wedding. While I know they've both moved on, I think I'd want my wedding to be all about us without having to worry about what his ex is thinking, or being reminded that he's taken the walk down the aisle before. Now that's just my opinion so tell me, would you be all right with your husband's ex-wife attending your wedding?

Creating your own wedding photobooth...

I loved this post from Green Wedding Shoes. In about a year I will do this at my 5 year vow renewal. And to think there are so many inexpensive ways to do it. Calling all readers...calling all readers, you have to let me know which one you liked the best. I am all for the brilliant yellow. The ideas are endless. Hey, if you have done it we would love to post your pics.

The photo booth is one thing I wish I had done at my wedding - I really love this idea. It's such a fun way to get some great photos of all your guests - you are much more likely to get photos of all the guests at your wedding, and I can guarantee they'll be enjoying themselves! I think using fabric as a background is a great idea for an outdoor photo booth in your backyard. I love these photos from Chelsea and Tec's and wedding photographed by Jose Villa.

A bold, bright pattern can really make a fun statement. Photo on the left from Lena Corwin's wedding and the right from this wedding photographed by Steven Mastroianni.

Urban Outfitters has some great patterned sheets that would work great (all swatches above from Urban). You could even get a few to mix things up. Other great places include IKEA, your local fabric store, or the LA Fashion District.

I love the photos from this next wedding. The bride's father and sister painted the wedding logo on the side of the house! It allowed for some great photos using it as the backdrop. Probably not doable for most of us - but still love it!! Photography from Cheri Pearl via Snippet and Ink.

Maybe fabric isn't your thing. Check out this amazing wood structure this couple made for their wedding! They had a bunch of them spread out around their wedding location.

Props also help your guests have more fun. These could be: fun hats, glasses, mustaches, a sofa, umbrellas, something that fits with your wedding theme ... the ideas are endless! You can have your photographer's assistant work the camera - or set up a tripod with your own digital camera and a self timer.

Okay, so we have been getting questions on our blog about the DIY Photoshop Invitation Workshop. Here is what they posted yesterday on their DIY Blog that should answer your questions.

Seriously, this is getting ridiculous! Update: the hosting company has informed me that they’re not allowing streaming video from their servers. (After, you know, they told me they were “experts” in this area.) I’m now on the hunt for a new host. Oh, what fun. KILL ME NOW.

The good news is that I’m not letting this completely stall the workshop. I’ve set up a page where you’ll be able to download the non-video portions of the workshop materials. You’ll need this info before you get into PS anyway so it works out, right?

Holly Stalder an independent designer from Portland, Oregon is in love with faded velvet ribbons and edwardian lace. Her designs begin with her favorite raw materials: salvaged antique fabrics and trims. Intrigued by the fragility of fabrics and how they and age and wear over time, she incorporates these elements into her modern designs. She also makes wedding dresses. Real Wedding California: Hillary and Joe

Ooooh the wedding dress! How awesome! Hillary and Joe had an intimate wedding in San Francisco and Napa. Aaron Delesie Photography did an excellent job documenting this day. Enjoy!

The reception for this wedding was held at a private residence in the heart of Napa. Everyone dined on a huge patio that overlooked the neighbors vineyard at sunset. Very simple arrangements, lots of lavender, and a very clever arrangement of miniature cakes that created the base for the brides vintage cake topper helped to make this wedding truly unique.

Real Wedding Southern California: Emily and Eric

Emily and Eric got married at one of Laguna Beach's premiere venues [Seven Degrees]. I love the affect of a white ceremony and a super colorful reception. The purple for the reception is so warm and elegant. Chenin of Boutwell Studios did an amazing job. Congrats on your one month old!

The delightful Emily and Eric tied the knot at [seven degrees] in Laguna Beach on New Year's Eve. This was a wedding of many firsts for me. My first NYE wedding, my first time shooting portraits after dark, my first time shooting 8 months pregnant (!) and my first Canon 5d Mark II wedding. It was a lot to think about, but I am so thrilled with the results.

I have lots to share, and I know I've been slacking on the blog lately, so I'll get right down to it!

Some details -

Just after sunset, Emily and Eric exchanged vows. For the photographers out there who are wondering about the 5d Mark II, I shot these entirely natural light - ISO 1600, 85mm 1.2 @ 1.4.

After the ceremony, we braved the freezing cold to shoot some night portraits of Eric and Emily. The first shots were done with a Smith Victor video light, which promptly broke in the first 10 minutes of shooting.
